Lupercalia | Valentine’s Day
February
February actually comes from the word februum meaning purification and februa, which were the rites or instruments used for purifications. These things were used in the Roman Festival. The rites and instruments were formed as a part of preparations for the “coming of Spring” in Rome. Lupercalia festival is one of the earliest ancestors of Valentine’s Day.
Lupercalia
Lupercalia the vanilla description is that it was an ancient Roman annual festival, observed in the city of Rome the month of February, the 13th to the 15th to fending off evil spirits and purify the city, releasing health and fertility. There is soo much MORE!
The festival was centered on honoring the She-Wolf who suckled Romulus and Remus, (Wiki their story, very interesting.) the twin founders of the Roman Empire. At the start of the celebration the high priests would ritually sacrifice dogs and goats in a cave called Lupercal on the Palatine Hill. Some background, a male goat represented sexuality in ancient Roman times. The red blood of the sacrifice and female mensuration always represented fertility. Some think that this is what dictated the coloration of all things Valentine’s Day. The white milk used in the ceremony was to represent semen. These two thing complete the circle of fertility.
After the sacrifice, two young male priests were led to the alter with their foreheads touching. The blood from the sacrificial knife was smeared upon their joined foreheads and then wiped clean with a piece of wool dipped in milk, at which time they were directed into laughter…. No one really knows why they had to laugh.
Fresh skins of the goats were then divided into long stripes of leather whips. They called it a Febura, which closely ties to the month of its celebration. The men would feast, then strip naked and parade through the streets of Rome, striking with their whips who ever they come into contact with. It was believed that anyone who was struck with the whip would be granted fertility and would be free from evil. Whipping yourself was seen as fending off evil and for women evil would be what kept you from getting pregnant. You can only imagine if you were a woman you definitely would want to be seen being whipped showing you as being fertile and virtuous.
Back to the goat, Faunus was the Roman god of the fields, flocks, and woodlands, and was often depicted as half-man and half-goat. He was associated with the Greek god Pan, and history believes they may be one and the same.
They were/are the symbol of lust and ever craving for sexual gratification, it made perfect sense to use goat as the whip of choice. They were whipping out the evil, cleansing the skin and replacing it with lust and desire. The two administers of the whippings were always naked youthful males, that only sweetened and accentuated the exchanges between the people of Rome during this lust filled holiday.
The practice only leads to an annual ceremonial practice heavily laden in eroticism. The ancient festival was filled with nudity, violence, sexuality, ritual sacrifices, feasting, and kinds of naughty games. Take what you may and add it to your practice during this holiday.
