Frosted glass, I didn’t think of that. That one I can do and he would like it. I used to set a drink out for after his shower when I knew he had a long or hard day.

Maybe bake him fresh bread. I haven’t done that in awhile. Though he used to take my baking like a mad woman as a sign I was feeling out of sorts and needed to reconnect with myself and be at peace in our relationship. Maybe if I tell him it’s my offering to us both connecting and feeling less stress.

Let him know you appreciate how hard he works and would like to help him relax after a hard day. Ask him if there is anything he would like you to do. You could give examples to help get the ball rolling like having a drink ready for him when he gets home, rubbing his feet, baking bread or other treats, etc. Sometimes my husband needs some time to himself, time to decompress from work, before I talk about domestic stuff, that gives him time to let go of work thoughts and switch his focus to home.

~ “Why not give him a few minutes to ‘detox’-even a half hour-when he first gets home from work? Then he’ll be happy to hear about your day and any concerns. When he steps into the house, what he really wants to do is take a leak. He needs time alone … to decompress. Often the best place to do that is in the bathroom, where he’s less likely to be interrupted. Dads, especially, need to decompress before they arrive home. It’s why I suggest to men that on stressful days they choose their radio station or CD appropriately. They need to find some elevator music to wind them down.” – Dr. Kevin Lehman 7 Things He’ll Never Tell You… But You Need To Know ~

He doesn’t necessarily get to head to the bathroom first or decompress quietly even if I don’t really speak to him for an hour. Casualties of shared housing.

Often he sits right down at the table to work on paperwork from work. He definitely needs to step into calm and unwind but it’s something we are failing at accomplishing here.

If it’s difficult to create a calm and relaxing atmosphere at home could he take some time after work before coming home to unwind? Like stopping at a quiet bar, coffee shop, bookstore, or library? Drive to a park that is on or near his route home? I would guess that him knowing he has your support and approval to take time for himself would ease his stress a bit.

He has gotten home and asked if I’d like to just go out to eat so out the door we have gone.
